Lifeboat volunteers from Sunderland RNLI Lifeboat Station scrambled into action shortly before 6pm last night [Tuesday, 1 December] to assist the crew of a 15ft safety vessel which had run aground on mud-banks near Liebherr Cranes, Deptford. The 15ft safety vessel is working in the area as part of a six week project forming part of the design works for the new road bridge spanning the River Wear between Pallion and Wessington Way. The two men onboard (adults from Liverpool) were transferred to the inshore lifeboat and landed at Sunderland Marina. Shortly after 11pm the charities two inshore lifeboats re-launched in gale force winds, rain showers, and near freezing temperatures to attempt to refloat the stricken vessel on the rising tide. In a joint operation involving eight volunteers onboard the two inshore lifeboats the vessel was successfully refloated shortly before midnight before being towed to a temporary mooring within Sunderland Marina.
